Full Ritual for the Full Moon
by Danielle Ribaudo

Various cultures and people believe in flowing with the phases of the Moon. From her control of the tides, to her representation of the rhythm of time, the significance of the lunar cycle brings an opportunity for growth, and a time to harness her power to connect more deeply with the natural effects she has on each of us.

The moon represents the feminine aspects of our being, our intuition, emotional bodies,  innate creativity, and desire to nurture.  She is the yin to our yang, the tha to our ha (ha-tha), and the moon – to our sun. By tapping into her rhythm and listening to her wisdom we can cultivate more balance and equanimity into our lives.

The Full Moon energy is powerful and radiant. It is the end of the cycle. It not only represents a fullness that propels us into action, it represents death. This means it is a time to transform and to start letting go. Letting go of old actions or reactions that no longer serve you. Each cycle is a time to step into the light. To leave behind anything that dims that essence.

To create a greater listening many cultures take part in various rituals during the time of the New or Full Moon. These gestures can be large or small. You can do this in solitude or with a trusted group from your tribe. Below are some steps you can take to create a Full Moon Ritual of your own. You can follow this step by step, or just take from it the pieces that speak to you. Some moon days all I do is journal and sit quietly. Other occasions call for larger action, community, and ritual. Any effort – big or small does not go unnoticed by the Universe.

Create a Sacred Space.

Cleanse your space. Clean the house and de-clutter. Smudge with sage. Set up an altar with items of importance to you and specific to your intentions.  Light some candles. Set the vibe.

Ground.

If possible go outside under the moonlight. Allow your bare feet to connect to the earth. Slow down and deepen your breath. Close your eyes and imagine the light of moon washing away all that blocks you from reaching your full potential. Listen to your inner knowing and notice what comes up. Take as little or as long as you need.

Journal.

Journal your findings. Words are powerful. Clearly write down your intention of what you would like to release. If comfortable say it out loud.  “I now let go of…” “ I will no longer be burdened by…” Find a language that works for you.  Then release it – rip it up, or burn it by the flame of a candle. To discard safely be sure to have a fireproof bowl to drop the piece of paper into once lit. As your intention burns to ashes repeat to yourself (or aloud) your mantra for letting go. If done in a group setting you can go one at a time and hold space for each person as they move through their purging.  Notice if the paper burns quickly, or if there is resistance to the flame. Does this match up to how willing you are to truly let go and move forward into the next phase.

Cleanse…

Let the magic of rituals, and of a time that’s coming to a close ring true. It’s all there for you, and then it’s all gone. Learn to love the process of letting go. Til next time…
